About The University Of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh is a world-leading university that is globally recognised for its teaching, research and innovation. The University occupies five campuses across the City of Edinburgh, representing one of the largest University estates in the UK, and includes many buildings of historical and architectural significance.

Who Is Craig Marc?

Craig Marc is the Technical Compliance and Building Services Engineer for the University of Edinburgh Estates Department. Craig oversees all Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and the University’s Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system, using SFG20 to plan compliance tasks and Zetasafe to record them.

What Problems Was The University Trying To Solve?

Craig explained that despite the University investing in a larger Compliance Team with over 550 buildings, the team still struggled to find the time and resource to keep up with their maintenance requirements.

How Did SFG20 Help Craig Solve The University’s Problems?

“Due to resource constraints, we decided to work partly to SFG20 standards but we do aspire to meet as much of them as possible. We tailor them and make sure that we're picking up all the statutory requirements and the oranges, anything below that we do when we have the resources or we feel it’s critical.”

Craig also mentioned that SFG20 already saves their PPM planner roughly 50% of his time. Outdoor-shot-of-buildings

“It’s an estimate, but I think if you're having to write it all from scratch, it's probably saved them at least half.”

“For me, the integration with CAFM was a big selling point, as it just takes the human error out plus the automatic updates are brilliant. It allows us to check updates side by side and it all flows into Archibus to update our schedules too.”

By "integration", Craig is referring to the SFG20 Digital Partner Programme, a freely available API that allows any partnered FM system to seamlessly exchange data with Facilities-iQ. You can check out all the up-and-coming FM systems on our Digital Partner Page

“Facilities-iQ gives us that reassurance that we are keeping up to date with all the current statutory requirements."

"An additional significant time saving has been when we're looking for any technical information or legislation, SFG20 is a big tool for finding that information. It saves me a lot of time that I would normally spend trying to find on the internet."

"If I get asked any questions, I don't know the answer to, I can go through SFG20.

Would Craig Recommend SFG20?

"The overall system is good. The experience in Facilities-iQ is much more user friendly and looks more modern etc. I think it’s going to be a handy tool going forward.”
